Session Information

Chirality --- geometric asymmetry that distinguishes left- from right-handed systems --- underpins a wealth of light-matter phenomena, from enantioselective molecular recognition to topological photonics and quantum optical activity. In nanophotonic metasurfaces, optical chirality is traditionally engineered using local, resonant architectures. However, nonlocal electromagnetic responses profoundly alter chiral light-matter interactions, often invalidating conventional design paradigms. This special session places chirality at the forefront, exploring how nonlocality enhances, suppresses, or even redefines chiroptical effects such as circular dichroism, optical activity, spin-selective transmission, and chiral emission spanning the visible to mid-infrared range, encompassing both luminescent and thermal radiation. We welcome contributions on the following but not limited to: (i) nonlocal theories of chiral electromagnetic response; (ii) experimental observation of nonlocal chiral signatures in plasmonic and dielectric metasurfaces; (iii) computational models that capture quantum and spatially dispersive chirality; and (iv) applications in ultrasensitive chiral biosensing, chiral quantum light sources, mid-infrared chiral thermal emitters, and symmetry-breaking nanodevices. By centering chirality in the nonlocal regime, this session aims to chart a new path toward beyond-local chiral nanophotonics.
